First Scoop: Chevrolet Working On Two Caprice Police Vehicles

TheGMSource - It's no secret to enthusiasts of both Pontiac and Chevrolet that buyers are screaming for a version of the Pontiac G8 to come states side. We know that the Chevrolet Caprice has been approved for police agencies around the country and has previously been said to remain a fleet only car.

TheGMSource has uncovered some new information that leads us to believe the Caprice may also be available for retail sale as well. The information is speculation and only speculation at this point but hear us out never-the-less.

Chevrolet Caprice Pursuit

The vehicle pictured above is being called the Chevrolet Caprice Pursuit model. The Pursuit model would feature all of the features you can expect in a police car. We've also been told that there is another model currently being worked on, that was never before announced but just shown in the Caprice PPV pdf that was released on the Internet within the past few days.

Chevrolet Caprice Detective

The vehicle you see is a new model dubbed the Chevrolet Caprice Detective. The Detective is a model that was never mentioned or made public by GM until the pdf had been released. Sources tell TheGMSource that the plan for the Detective is for it to be an unmarked vehicle of the Caprice Pursuit model. The Detective would not be fitted with the interior, bells, whistles, gizmos, etc of the fleet Pursuit model that would be fleet only. This would seem to indicate the Detective could be considered for retail sale.

Why We Think Retail Sale Is Possible

TheGMSource has exclusively learned additional information in regards to the Caprice PPV program. When the Caprice PPV was announced it was announced at a time that Ford had no clear plan or program to replace the outgoing Ford Crown Victoria program. It was expected one of the largest purchasers of the Caprice would be the state of California. Ford, however has announced plans for a new Police Program and this is where things get tricky.

We've learned that the LAPD has yet to provide GM with a Letter of Intent on how many Chevy Caprice vehicles it plans to purchase from General Motors. This would seem to indicate that either the LAPD is reviewing the cost of the Caprice PPV to that of Fords new program, the LAPD is simply going to purchase far fewer Caprice models then GM had previously expected, or a combination of the two.

In return, we believe GM has approved the Detective model for production with the thought of retail sale. It would make sense that if GM were deep enough in the Caprice program and had a buyer for some vehicles the automaker would want to make up for lost fleet volume with retail sales. We (and GM) know enthusiasts have asked for a retail version of the Caprice and what better way to make up lost fleet sales then with a retail model such as the Detective done at little to no cost to the automaker.
