The Source's View: The GMC Granite Concept

TheGMSource - It's that time of the year again that I, you know, TheGMSource chimes in with my opinion on GM's concept and production vehicles at this years 2010 North American International Auto Show.

Because I know you're all waiting to hear what I have to say wait no longer and hit the jump for "The Sources View" of hte GMC Graphite Urban Utility Vehicle.

First, I must say that the GMC Granite won the "Eyes On Design" award for best concept vehicle at this years show. For those that don't know what that is, its a panel of automotive designers that grade all concepts at the show and a winner is chosen by said panel of designers. Kudos to the GMC Brand and the team that worked on the Granite for the accomplishment.

The Sources View
The GMC Granite is a great concept vehicle there is no denying it. It's styling speaks volumes and screams "look at me now." It's a concept that was designed with women in mind and can store a 10 speed bicycle as well as a stroller in its large rear when seats are folded flat. There simply is no denying it's a great sytling concept but that's where the so called "buck" ends.

The Granite is a vehicle that fits absolutely nowhere in the GMC brand portfolio. It was long rumored that Pontiacs "youth brand" and "Scion fighter" would be that of Pontiacs position in the market. With Pontiac no longer fitting into GM's plans going forward and with the GMC Granite Urban Utility Vehicle introduction it's clear to see GM is looking to take the truck only brand the "Scion" brand as well.

That's brand suicide. The GMC line of trucks and crossovers earns thousands more then it's Chevy counterpart - that's why GMC stayed. Watering down the brand with the GMC Graphite, or a retail version of a small little vehicle will do damage to the brand that is better left undone. Don't believe me? Ask Pontiac who tried to become the "everything to everybody brand" and see what answer you get...oh wait Jim Hopson former Pontiac Spokesperson has left the company. Guess you'll get a busy signal on that line.

The Granite is based on the Chevy Orlando that is slated for production in 2012. The Orlando is where GM's focus needs to be on any Urban Utility Vehicle and the GMC truck brand needs to stay just that. Powerful, roomy, large trucks that buyers are willing to pay thousand more for.
